Description

Description:

This is a Fixed-term appointment through 6/30/2023 with the possibility of extension or conversion to a regular position dependent on budget and business needs.

Santa Clara Law has one of the leading privacy programs in the nation. The program’s strengths include:

  • Numerous faculty experts and a dedicated research fellow
  • An innovative and successful Privacy Law Certificate, which (at any time) has 20-30 students actively pursuing careers in privacy law. The law school community includes dozens of other students interested in privacy and an active alumni base
  • A robust curriculum
  • A tradition of successful events
  • Substantial funding

We now seek an administrative leader to manage and grow the program. The exact priorities will be influenced heavily by the successful candidate’s vision. However, we hope the successful candidate will help us launch new non-JD degrees or certificates.

This position is funded for three years. If we can secure additional funding, we hope to extend the position for a longer period or indefinitely.

This is an administrative position, so the position does not have teaching, research, or writing responsibilities. The position will work closely, and in parallel, with the Managing Director of the High Tech Law Institute and the Internet Ethics Manager in the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. It is likely the position will take a leadership role in tying together the various privacy efforts across the entire SCU campus. We expect this will be a high-visibility position both internally and externally.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Expand the law school’s academic program on privacy, including non-JD certificate or degree options
  • Build cross-disciplinary offerings with other SCU academic departments
  • Support the Privacy Law Certificate students, the Privacy Law Student Organization, and other students interested in privacy
  • Organize events for on-campus and off-campus communities
  • Support the privacy alumni community and the local and global privacy community
  • Liaise with the IAPP and other external organizations
  • Promote/evangelize the program and the accomplishments by community members
  • Pursue funding opportunities and create new funding sources
  • Supervise research fellow, fractional administrative support, and student assistants.
  • Prepare and communicate performance evaluations.
  • Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.
  • Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
  • Maintains contact with stakeholders and solicits feedback for improved services.
  • Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
  • Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
  • Prepares and submits progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
  • Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred.

This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

Qualifications inlcude:

  • Bachelors degree required. A JD, or other advanced degree relevant to privacy law, is strongly preferred.
  • A background in privacy law is strongly preferred. Preferably the successful candidate will have 10-12 years of experience working as a practitioner or administrator and several years experience in the privacy community. The successful candidate likely will have at least one IAPP certification.
  • Major pluses would include past experience with program-building and fundraising.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and independently drive projects to completion in a complex organization
  • Collaborative and a team player
  • Community-builder
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Willingness to fundraise
