Overview of CLIC

The Northeastern Center Law, Innovation and Creativity (CLIC), at the Northeastern University School of Law, is dedicated to the advancing interdisciplinary research and dialog on critical issues relating to the legal regulation of technological innovation and creative enterprises in view of sustainable and just social development. Housed within the School of Law (NUSL), the Center’s affiliated faculty have appointments across Northeastern University’s schools and colleges, and conduct research on a wide array of issues, including intellectual property, privacy, commercial law, internet and information security, network sciences, constitutional law and human rights.

The Center supports a broad curriculum in law, technology and creative economies, and sponsors conferences, lectures, colloquia, several moot court teams, and workshops that introduce students to career opportunities in related fields.

Position Summary

The Center seeks to hire its first Managing Director (and Career Advisor). The Managing Director will provide long-term and day-to-day leadership and management of the Center, with direction from the Center’s Faculty Directors and in collaboration with center faculty. The Managing Director will have responsibility for organizing the Center’s lectures, colloquia and conferences, will help recruit and take the lead in supervising and providing support for one or more research fellows, will be responsible for grant-writing and supporting the Center’s externally-funded research, will propose and manage the Center’s budget, and will work with the Faculty Directors and the Director of Development to create an Advisory Board. The Managing Director will also work with the Dean, Associate Deans, and the Director of On-Line and Hybrid programs to develop new and expand existing non-JD programs relating to CLIC.

The Managing Director will also act as a liaison between CLIC and NUSL’s Center for Co-op and Career Development. In this role, the Managing Director will provide strategic career guidance to students pursuing careers in law and technology fields, offer counseling appointments to students related to internships/co-ops, fellowships, and postgraduate employment, and work with the Co-op and Career Staff to design educational programming aimed at highlighting the professional opportunities in these emerging fields. The Managing Director, in conjunction with the Director of New/Alternative Markets, will also identify new opportunities and conduct employer outreach.

Qualifications

  • The Managing Director must have a J.D., or other graduate degree in relevant fields, and a minimum of two years of professional experience in technology law, privacy/security, or intellectual property.
  • Substantial administrative experience, including supervisory experience, strongly preferred.
  • A track record of grant-writing and/or grant-funded research is a plus.
  • The preferred candidate will have some experience in mentoring or advising law students or young professionals.
  • Strong communication skills, including writing and face-to-face presentations.
  • Substantive knowledge of the specified fields and the ability to work well with multiple constituencies including faculty, industry leaders, students and employers is essential.
  • Commitment to diversity.
  • Fluency in social media avenues is strongly desired.
