Case Western Reserve University School of Law invites applications for a full-time, two-year fellowship position beginning June 2021. The second year of this position is dependent upon performance and funding. Applicants should be practitioners and/or recent law school graduates with some litigation experience and have an interest in developing an expertise in litigating First Amendment issues.

Case Western Reserve University School of Law has a dynamic and nationally recognized Experiential Education curriculum.  The highly regarded Milton A. Kramer Law Clinic Center forms part of this curriculum. The First Amendment Clinic, for third-year law students, will focus on litigation involving freedom of speech, press, assembly, and petition. The clinic will offer pro bono legal services to those who rely on the First Amendment to collect and publish information, freely criticize government policy, and express differing viewpoints. Its goal is to train a new generation of free speech advocates and serve as a resource for organizations, students, journalists, and citizens defending and advancing First Amendment issues.

The Stanton Foundation Fellowship is focused on giving an attorney early in their career the ability to develop a deep grounding in free speech law and civil rights litigation through the  First Amendment litigation of the Clinic.  The Fellow will work with staff on all aspects of the program. Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide training, supervision, and support for law students enrolled in the First Amendment Clinic.
  • Provide direct legal services and representation to clinic client.
  • Non-litigation responsibilities may include advocacy, public speaking, blogging, media appearances, and administrative clinic support such as case intake, planning and managing events, and meeting with funders and other stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Mandatory qualifications:

  • A JD degree from an approved, ABA-accredited law school, with a record of strong academic achievement.
  • Must be licensed in Ohio or eligible to waive into the jurisdiction.

Preferences:

  • 1-3 years of legal practice experience.
