New America’s Open Technology Institute is a non-profit research and advocacy organization that works at the forefront of technology and policy, and our mission is ensuring that every community has equitable access to digital technology and its benefits. As a policy program associate at OTI, you will work with lawyers, technologists, and organizers to research and write about our policy positions. Although you will work primarily with our Open Internet team and Wireless Future Project, you’ll have the opportunity to develop expertise in related areas such as copyright, privacy, surveillance, and law enforcement technology.

Our ideal candidate is already enthusiastic about new technologies and how they can be used to benefit the public in an inclusive and empowering way. These issues include network neutrality, internet access and adoption, and consumer protections for broadband access. Self-motivation and the ability to stay on task with minimal direction is key. The program associate is an entry-level position, but candidates should be able to comprehend and write about complex tech and policy issues for general audiences, and strong candidates will demonstrate proven research and writing ability.

Responsibilities:

-- Provide research and writing for policy papers, regulatory filings, articles and other materials;
-- Work with policy team on long-term projects, coordinating significant components of the project’s work;
-- Represent and advocate on behalf of OTI’s policy work before the public, press, and policymakers;
-- Research and stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and policy issues;
-- Edit, proofread, and fact-check various documents;
-- Support the planning of policy events, roundtables, and conferences;
-- Assist in other additional administrative duties as needed.

Qualifications:

-- A bachelor’s or master’s degree;
-- 1-2 years work experience in technology policy or a related field;
-- Interest and familiarity with technology and telecommunications policy;
-- Excellent research, analytical, writing, and editing skills;  
-- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time in order to meet multiple deadlines.

Within 1 month, you’ll…

-- Represent OTI alongside other staff in meetings with key partners and government stakeholders.

Within 3 months, you’ll…

-- Write and publish a blog post for OTI’s blog; 
-- Research and help write comments as part of a regulatory proceeding;
-- Help plan and execute an event related to your team’s project areas.

Within 6 months, you’ll…

-- Develop a draft of a policy paper.

Within 12 months, you’ll…

-- Author or co-author a policy paper and supervise its release and related outreach.
