Description

Description:

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is now accepting applications for its 2019-2021 Frank Stanton Fellowship. Applicants should be recent law school graduates or law students who will be graduating no later than Spring 2019, and have an interest in developing an expertise in First Amendment issues implicated by new technologies.

The fellow will work side-by-side EFF’s staff attorneys for two years on our active civil liberties litigation docket with the goal of developing a deep grounding in cutting-edge free speech law, and related issues in communications privacy and technology law. Non-litigation responsibilities may include advocacy, public speaking, blogging, media appearances, and work on legislative and regulatory matters related to surveillance and law enforcement. The fellow will not work on EFF’s Intellectual Property docket.

EFF is a great place to work. We offer a supportive and empowering environment, along with an excellent benefits package including housing cost assistance, student loans assistance, medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 403(b)(7) retirement savings program with matching, paid time off, holiday benefits, parental leave, a dog-friendly workplace, and more.

As an advocacy organization, EFF is committed to being part of a diverse community. Diversity of life experiences makes a big difference in how we identify and litigate legal issues, design privacy-enhancing software, and organize our activism. To that end, we deliberately seek applicants with different perspectives, identities, and experiences to build an inclusive workplace to better inform our advocacy and defense of freedom in our digital world. EFF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people of all races, genders, ages, abilities, orientations, ethnicities, and national origins to apply.

Qualifications:

  • Must be attending or have earned a Juris doctor degree from a United States law school and either be licensed to practice law in the US or planning to take a US state bar exam prior to October 2019.
  • Committed to defending freedom of speech.
  • Good communication skills including strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and focused.
  • An interest in working with a team of highly motivated lawyers and activists in a hard-working nonprofit environment.
  • Tech savviness and a familiarity with high tech public interest issues is not required; but applicants should be curious to learn more about those areas.

Application Info:

This position is based in San Francisco. The duration of the fellowship is 24 months and is non-renewable. Start date is negotiable but ideally no later than October 2019. Interested applicants should submit the following:

1. a detailed cover letter explaining their specific interest in and qualifications for the position,

2. a resume specifically tailored to the position,

3. a brief legal writing sample (800 words maximum), and

4. at least two references

Please include your writing sample in the same document upload as your resume.

EFF will accept applications until November 25th 2018. Although the position will not start until the Fall of 2019, we are aiming to make a decision by the end of January 2019.
