The Silicon Flatirons Center at the University of Colorado Law School is now accepting applications for the position of Executive Director.
The Silicon Flatirons Center is one of the leading technology law and policy centers in the country. The Center serves students, scholars, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and professionals at the intersection of law, policy, and technology. Silicon Flatirons’ core mission is threefold: to elevate the debate surrounding technology policy issues; inspire, prepare, and place students in these important areas; and support and enable entrepreneurship in the technology community. The Center has world-class strengths in multiple areas of technology law and policy including telecommunications, privacy, entrepreneurship, intellectual property, computing, and First Amendment law.
The Executive Director of Silicon Flatirons will serve as a thought leader for the Center, lead the Center’s fundraising and external relations efforts, support the Center’s academic and research programs, oversee the day-to-day programmatic and administrative functions of the Center, and mentor and support students aspiring to work in the area of technology law. Key responsibilities of the Executive Director role include (1) leading the Center’s fundraising efforts; (2) maintaining and growing the Center’s relationships with current and prospective sponsors, industry, and academia; (3) actively supporting directors of the Center’s initiatives; (4) creating smart and stimulating discussions around technology policy; (5) providing a nation-leading student experience for individuals interested in technology policy, emerging companies, and public service; and (6) offering a community-campus platform that supports innovators and builds social capital in the area.
Your responsibilities will include:
Fundraising and Community Relations
- Strong fundraiser to build and maintain a superior intellectual/policy network with creativity, national thought leadership and invigorating discussions.
- Develop robust and meaningful relationships with other thought leaders, the Silicon Flatirons community, alumni, and students.
- Maintain, strengthen, and broaden Silicon Flatirons.
- Cultivate new donors, draft fundraising proposals, steward existing funders, and lead thoughtful advisory board meetings. Silicon Flatirons is 100% gift funded and requires an Executive Director committed to sustainability and public service.
Foster Scholarship and Programming
- Provide intellectual contributions as well as oversee, research and develop conferences and roundtables, including writing descriptions, inviting speakers, and offering introductions and moderating panels.
- Generate ideas and marshal a deep network of speakers.
- Monitor social, political, industry, and legal trends to identify interesting areas for technology law and policy.
- Interface with faculty, researchers, and others throughout the University and community to foster relationships and advance our affinity group initiatives, and facilitate new projects and initiatives.
- Work with Silicon Flatirons Faculty Directors to maintain the Center’s academic rigor and excellence.
Student Engagement
- Instruct and/or lecture to students on technology law policy or related topics/fields.
- Connect students with the community and employers.
- Mentor and prepare students for internships and job placements.
- Engage students in Silicon Flatirons programming.
- Cultivate and maintain employer relationships.
Center Management and Administration
- Supervise and mentor staff, collaborate with faculty directors and fellows, oversee budget and operations.
Requirements:
- J.D. or other advanced degree and at least 3 years of experience in technology policy or related field(s) (e.g., intellectual property, privacy, information and communications technology, telecommunications, engineering, entrepreneurship).
- Substantive expertise in issues and current developments in technology policy.
- Demonstrated writing ability, particularly in legal and policy settings.
- Ability to work with multiple constituencies across the political spectrum.
- Commitment to public service.
- Commitment to diversity.
- Organization leadership and/or management experience.
- Exceptional fundraising capabilities.
- Experience working with (including teaching) students or fellows.
- Experience in an academic or high-level policy setting.
- Cross-disciplinary perspective (i.e. experience working with scholars in other fields, such as engineering, economics, and political science).
