The Department of Communication at Northern Kentucky University invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor of journalism, to begin in August 2014. The successful candidate will teach some combination of the following: introduction to mass media, news writing, reporting, copy editing and design, digital publishing, communication law, media ethics, public affairs reporting, online journalism, visual journalism, advertising, communication history, and media research. Experience with multimedia reporting tools in journalism is preferred. Expert understanding of the rapidly changing journalism profession also is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, teaching effectiveness, scholarship or creative activity, and service. A doctorate in mass communication or a related field is preferred, but a master’s in journalism or a related field with significant professional journalism experience will be considered.

The Department of Communication is part of the College of Informatics (http://informatics.nku.edu/), which focuses on the convergence of new information-related technologies and includes the Departments of Computer Science and Business Informatics. In addition to journalism, the department offers majors in public relations, electronic media and broadcasting, media informatics, and communication studies, and it also offers a master’s degree in communication. The College of Informatics is located in Griffin Hall, a new facility with state-of-the-art technology and includes integrated media labs, a research lab, and the Digitorium, a flexible large-scale teaching and interactive space.
