Description

The Oxford Internet Institute is the world’s leading centre for research into individual, collective and institutional behaviour on the internet. We are looking for a full-time Research Assistant to work on "Accessing and Using Big Data to Advance Social Science Knowledge". The project uses mixed methods to follow ‘big data’ from its public and private origins through open and closed pathways into the social sciences, and document and shape the ways they are being accessed and used to create new knowledge about the social world and the behaviour of human beings. This will be done primarily through five case studies, interviews of approximately 125 participants, and observations of data scientists in their workplaces.

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline, have a strong interest in the social aspects of online technologies and proven experience in analysing and writing papers based on qualitative and quantitative research. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, and will be able to take a lead in project management, data analysis, and the dissemination of results.

Whilst the role is a grade 7 position, we are willing to consider candidates who do not hold a PhD but hold a Master’s degree and are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at grade 6 (£26,264 - £31,331 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview where appropriate.

This position is available immediately until 31 May 2014.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. The application form and further details, including a job description and selection criteria, are available on the Oxford University's recruitment website.

The closing date for applications is 12:00 BST on Thursday 22 August 2013 and only applications received before then can be considered. Interviews for those short-listed are currently planned to take place in the week commencing Monday 16 September 2013.
