The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press is looking for an experienced attorney to work on its state and federal freedom of information efforts and its access to courts litigation.  The ideal candidate is an expert on FOI and access issues, has experience managing interns and junior attorneys, has some experience in journalism, has the foresight to spot emerging needs in the law, and has the energy and enthusiasm to help the Reporters Committee meet new challenges.

The Reporters Committee is a 43-year-old non-profit organization that specializes in legal defense and advocacy work for journalists and news organizations.  It is located in Arlington, VA.

REQUIREMENTS:

An attorney licensed to practice in at least one state with substantial litigation experience, particularly in the appellate area.  The candidate must have knowledge of and interest in First Amendment and FOI law and national and state legislative affairs, a demonstrated commitment to free press values, and excellent written and verbal communications skills.

DUTIES:

Monitors FOI and access issues nationwide and helps maintain the Reporters Committee’s leadership role in fighting for the rights of the press and the public.

Supervises an entry-level lawyer on a one-year fellowship who writes news stories, legal briefs, and memoranda.

Supervises college and law school interns who write for Reporters Committee publications.  Responsibilities include the hiring of interns and arranging regular educational seminars for interns and fellows.

Writes for and coordinates the publication of FOI and access-related legal guides.

Supervises the answering of calls on FOI and access issues.

Writes for all Reporters Committee publications as well as outside publications.

Serves as the Reporters Committee’s liaison to open government groups and coalitions.

Reports to the executive director.  Collaborates with the legal defense director and the publications editor.

SALARY:

Commensurate with experience.  Full health benefits provided (including dental) as well as long term disability and life insurance coverage.  Participation in a 401(k) available upon completion of one year of service.
