Description

The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) is a non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst for privacy leadership and scholarship, advancing principled data practices in support of emerging technologies.   The FPF Education and Innovation Foundation is the home for a number of FPF projects including student privacy, connected cars, ethics, wearables and other research areas.

Background

Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), FPF is launching a Privacy and Data Responsibility Research Coordination Network (RCN).   The RCN will create a community of academic researchers and industry practitioners to foster industry-academic cooperation to address research priorities identified in the recently released National Privacy Research Strategy (NPRS). The RCN will foster new partnerships, incentivize and distribute research, and promote discussion of issues under the NPRS, supporting action toward technological innovation while protecting individual privacy.

Drawing on the FPF’s relationships with industry chief privacy officers, academic researchers, regulators, civil rights advocates, and government actors, the RCN will facilitate communication and sharing of information and ideas about privacy on the cusp of new technologies and evolving social norms.  Issues will include: increasing transparency of data collection, sharing, use and retention; ensuring that information flows and use are consistent with privacy rules; and reducing privacy risks of analytical algorithms.

Position Description

The Research Coordinator will provide thought leadership, research and administrative support for the RCN. The coordinator will recruit academic and industry participants, communicate with stakeholders, edit a Privacy Scholarship Reporter, and organize and participate in academic workshops and events.

The Research Coordinator will manage the RCN, will undertake three major activities: 1) an inaugural launch conference, which will be part of FPF’s expanded Privacy Papers for Policymakers event; 2) a series of academic workshops and convening opportunities, incorporating both new and established academic programs; and 3) network communications, including the introduction of the Privacy Scholarship Reporter.
