UGA First Amendment Clinic Legal Fellow

The First Amendment Clinic at the University of Georgia School of Law seeks a Legal Fellow to start July 2026 (with some flexibility). This is a 2-year position with the second year dependent on performance and funding.

The First Amendment Clinic defends and advances the rights of free speech, press, assembly, and petition via regional litigation and advocacy, while providing law students with the practice and real-world experience to become leaders on First Amendment issues. The Clinic also serves as a resource for journalists, students, government employees, local and state officials, and members of the public on issues of government transparency and free expression in order to promote expressive freedoms and a better-informed citizenry. The Clinic is directed by a clinical faculty member and staffed by one legal fellow and one project attorney, with 8 to 9 law students enrolled in the Clinic each fall and spring semester.

Responsibilities

The 2026 Legal Fellow will be responsible for:

  • All aspects of litigation including intake/case evaluation; fact investigation and legal research; pleadings, discovery and motion practice; court conferences; hearings; trial; appeals; and amicus briefs.
  • Client counseling & non-litigation advocacy and negotiation
  • Delivery of external presentations on First Amendment, media law, and government transparency issues
  • Creation of legal resource materials and policy analysis
  • Supervising law students engaged in all of the above
  • Building and maintaining partnerships between the Clinic and external collaborators and stakeholders

Qualifications

  • A JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • A strong academic record
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to conduct thorough and accurate factual and legal research
  • Ability to engage in persuasive legal writing
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to successfully build and maintain relationships with students, clients, and community/professional partners .
  • Preference for one or more years of post-graduate litigation experience
