Description

Etsy is seeking an experienced professional to develop and execute our EU advocacy strategy from the ground up. You are an independent self-starter, and are just as comfortable developing high-level strategy as you are implementing nitty gritty campaign tactics. You are inspired by the prospect of empowering the Etsy community as advocates for themselves, and using the power of business for good. This is a full-time position based in Dublin, and reports to the Policy Director.

About the Team

We advocate for public policies that make it easier for creative entrepreneurs on Etsy to pursue their passions, work for themselves, and succeed on their own terms. Our work is member-powered and mission-driven. We prioritize connecting Etsy sellers with the policy makers that represent them, and advocate for collaborative policy solutions that leverage the power of the public and private sector to address the challenges our sellers face. We also engage on tech policy issues from time to time, especially when they impact the startup community.

About the Job

You’ll join our small advocacy team, helping build Etsy’s unique, mission-driven approach to government relations. You will implement strategic campaigns to achieve our priority policy goals and connect our seller community with policy makers. You will work with diverse stakeholders within and outside Etsy to advance our advocacy agenda, seeking innovative opportunities for collaboration between the government, Etsy, and our community to support micro-businesses and the emerging maker economy.

Responsibilities:

  • -- Monitor public policy issues in Brussels and priority national markets that could impact Etsy and our community, keeping relevant staff informed and involved as needed
  • -- Recommend policy positions and external actions on a diverse array of issues, ranging from tech policy to the challenges facing micro-businesses
  • -- Identify opportunities to push Etsy’s agenda in the public sphere and position Etsy as a leader on priority issues
  • -- Identify strategic targets and build relationships with government officials and allies to advance policy goals
  • -- Organize and lead meetings between elected officials, Etsy staff, and the Etsy community
  • -- Conduct or commission research to support our policy agenda
  • -- Represent Etsy at meetings, events, conferences, panels, and possibly press
  • -- Support executive team engagement with government, including drafting remarks, preparing briefing materials, and providing follow-up support
  • -- Engage the Etsy seller community in policy campaigns and provide support to community-led initiatives

About You

You are a professional advocate with significant experience running campaigns and engaging on public policy issues on behalf of an organized constituency. You are an excellent communicator, and understand the political dynamics that surround campaign strategy and effective government relations. You are excited by the opportunity to advance Etsy’s mission in the public sphere, and willing to rethink traditional approaches to corporate government relations to accomplish our goals in a mission-aligned way.

You will succeed in this job if you:

  • -- Have 10+ years of experience working in government and public policy, and have a point of view on what makes effective campaigns succeed
  • -- Have the ability to work independently, and to manage projects from conception to completion, often without additional support
  • -- Are an excellent writer, and can distil complex policy issues into simple explanations and compelling messages
  • -- Are detail-oriented, with excellent organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills
  • -- Exercise sound judgement and discretion
  • -- Are a team player with a can-do attitude and willingness to jump into any task
  • -- Have a passion for Etsy’s mission and empowering our community of sellers to advocate for themselves on issues they care about
  • -- Are fluent in English, French and preferably German
  • -- Bonus points if you are a maker yourself or have your own creative business

What’s Next

If you’re interested in joining the team, please send us your resume and cover letter. Let us know how you fit the bill for each of the requirements above. Etsy is a place that values individuality and variety, so use your judgement and write in your own voice. If you practice a craft, curate a blog, or have an interesting side project, we’d love to hear about it. Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
