Role Summary:

NPR is seeking a versatile attorney with at least 6 years of experience and a passion for public media. The ideal candidate will have expertise in content licensing (both inbound and outbound), technology transactions, and commercial contract negotiation and drafting, as well as substantive knowledge of copyright and communications law. Outstanding written and oral communications skills and an understanding of digital technologies are essential. Experience analyzing proposed legislation and regulations and preparing white papers and agency comments, working knowledge of trademark law, background in data security and privacy law, and an understanding of the public radio system are desirable.

This position is a one-year position with a high probability of continuation.

Essential Duties Include:

  • Reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and advising on the structure of complex technology contracts, such as software licensing, maintenance, and services agreements, IT consulting, e-commerce, website hosting and application development agreements, and telecommunications and satellite services agreements
  • Reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and advising on contracts governing creation, use, and licensing of content
  • Developing, drafting, and implementing contract templates in support of NPR’s evolving activities
  • Advising management of NPR business units on structuring and maintaining vendor, customer, and strategic relationships
  • Developing and implementing policies for use and protection of intellectual property, including audio, text, images, video, software, and trademarks
  • Analyzing proposed legislation and regulations and preparing white papers and agency comments
  • Advising on risk management and regulatory compliance

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, with excellent academic credentials;
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department;
  • Bar membership in good standing (preferably District of Columbia).

Required Skills:

  • High level of professionalism and outstanding business judgment;
  • Strong transactional background, with deep experience in drafting, negotiating, analyzing, and closing licensing, technology, and complex strategic agreements;
  • Interest in and knowledge of media, technology, intellectual property, and commercial contract law;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, to set and adjust priorities, to work under pressure, and to maintain composure and a sense of humor while doing so;
  • Superb written and oral communications skills.
