Description
Working under the Technology for Liberty Program Director, the ACLUm-Ford Science and Technology Fellow must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, integrated advocacy office to help lead the organization’s work as we pursue an Open Justice project, harnessing technology in the service of government transparency and civil rights. The fellow will create systems to liberate, analyze, and communicate government data with the goal of achieving our policy goals related to fixing the criminal justice system and expanding civil rights and civil liberties protections for all. The fellow will also help advocates understand and communicate complex issues related to information security, electronic privacy, and large government data systems.
Note: This is a temporary position funded for one year. The position is based in Boston. The fellow will work in our office in downtown Boston; unfortunately, we cannot accept applicants who seek to work remotely.
Principal responsibilities
-- Create and maintain transparency tools;
-- Produce data analysis and mapping projects in cooperation with our criminal justice and surveillance policy experts; and
-- Analyze and communicate about government programs and policies involving technology and civil liberties.
Required qualifications
-- Programming skills;
-- Data analysis and visualization expertise;
-- Desire and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a diverse team;
-- Good attitude and sense of humor; and
-- Strong belief in the mission and goals of the ACLU of Massachusetts.
Desired qualifications
-- Familiarity with the latest infosec research including cryptography and other digital security tools;
-- Experience working with or studying large digital infrastructure projects involving enormous quantities of sensitive personal information;
-- Graphic design expertise;
-- Project management experience;
-- Curiosity about the world and a desire to contribute meaningfully to shaping the law; and
-- Good writing and public speaking skills.
The fellow will be an integral part of the team leading our work to meet the following goals:
-- Building transparency tools to assist the organization’s legal and advocacy arms;
-- Using mapping and data viz to translate open data into compelling narratives;
-- Analyzing large data sets and tech related documents to help advocates make compelling legal and policy arguments;
-- Translating complex science and tech issues for policy advocates to ensure our policy recommendations are accurate, timely, and responsive to existing systems; and
-- Identifying and helping advocates understand cutting-edge and near-future technology and privacy issues.
Compensation
The fellow will receive a guaranteed one-year salary of $60,000 plus a full benefits package including generous healthcare, paid vacation and sick leave.
