The Student Press Law Center is accepting applications for a remote Summer 2023 legal intern. The internship is a terrific opportunity for law students interested in media law topics and the First Amendment and free press rights of journalists, and particularly student journalists.
About SPLC
The Student Press Law Center is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization that works at the intersection of law, journalism and education to promote, support and defend the First Amendment rights of student journalists at the high school and college level. Founded in 1974, SPLC has a free legal hotline that serves thousands of student journalists and advisers across the United States. We also engage in training, advocacy and outreach to empower student journalists, promote the value of journalism education and spotlight the need to ensure legal protections for student press freedom through the New Voices movement. SPLC is based in Washington, D.C, but our staff works remotely from across the country.
Description
At SPLC, legal interns work closely with our attorneys to conduct legal research, refine and update legal guides and fact sheets, all to support and educate student journalists and their advisers. Past legal interns have also assisted in drafting amicus briefs and conducted survey research, depending on the availability of the work and the intern’s interest.
Duration
The full-time internship will last 8 to 10 weeks and begin around May 29, though exact start and end dates are flexible.
Location
The internship will be conducted remotely, with regular interactions with SPLC staff (legal and otherwise) via Zoom, Slack and email.
Compensation
For an intern without other funding, SPLC will pay a stipend of $5,600 for 10 weeks (prorated for shorter internships). For an intern with other funding, such as through their law school, SPLC will supplement that funding, if necessary, to ensure the intern receives a total of $5,600 (prorated for shorter internships) from all sources.
Qualifications
Our summer legal internship is open to all U.S.-based law students who will have completed their first year of law school before the internship begins. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and demonstrate superior research and writing skills, as well as a commitment to the principles of press freedom. The ideal candidate will have studied — either as a law student or undergraduate — or have an understanding of copyright law and fair use, freedom of information laws, defamation and privacy law and will have a background or interest in journalism. Experience as a student journalist is especially welcome.

- A writing sample (preferably a legal writing sample)
- Three references that can speak to your research and writing skills and why you would be a good fit for the Student Press Law Center. A recommendation letter that sings your praises and tells us how we can make you a better law student during your summer at SPLC is always welcome.
