There is an opportunity to join the University of Glasgow’s School of Law and the Centre for Copyright & New Business Models in the Creative Economy (CREATe) at an exciting point in its development, as part of the University of Glasgow’s ongoing investment in the creative economy. CREATe, an international copyright research hub established in 2012 with research funding from the AHRC, EPSRC and ESRC, is hiring a Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law.

The Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law will undertake research of international excellence in line with the School/College/University research strategy, making a substantial contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. With a sustained and distinguished research profile in intellectual property law, you will be able to demonstrate an established record of high-quality research and the ability to make a significant contribution to the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.

There are current teaching needs in trade mark law; patent law; e-commerce, privacy and data protection law; and IP related aspects of competition law but expertise across all branches of intellectual property law will be considered.

Main duties and responsibilities

  1. Develop and maintain individual/joint research projects in related subject areas and, where appropriate, to secure external funding required to support research.
  2. Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the subject area including establishing a track record of high quality publications.
  3. Attendance and participation in appropriate research seminars/conferences relevant to research and teaching.
  4. Responsible for the supervision and training of postgraduate research students to ensure their effective development.
  5. Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching activities in accordance with School undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  6. Supervise individual student projects and assist with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.
  7. Contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research–led approach to student learning.
  8. Assess (using a variety of methods and techniques) assignments and exam papers and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
  9. Engage in professional development as appropriate.
  10. Undertake administrative activities as required by the Head of School.
  11. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan - Inspiring People – Changing the World.

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience in a similar or related role.
  • Up to date knowledge of research within subject related area.
  • Developing track record of published research compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the REF and/or development and delivery of teaching.
  • Developing international research profile.
  • Established international research profile in relevant area
  • A track record of published research of international quality compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the REF.

Job Dimensions

  • Deliver teaching for undergraduate/postgraduate courses.
  • Supervise individual undergraduate and taught postgraduate dissertations.
  • Conjunction with experienced colleagues undertake PhD supervision.
  • Undertake appropriate disciplinary and interdisciplinary research.
  • Assume responsibility for appropriate administrative duties as required by Head of School.

Terms and Conditions 

Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 7/8, £34,520 - £38,833 / £42,418 - £49,149 per annum.
