ONA 2013The UNC Center for Media Law and Policy is joining with the Online News Association to present the third-annual “Law School for Digital Journalists” at the Online News Association’s 2013 conference in Atlanta. This intensive day of classes will cover what digital journalists need to know about how the law impacts their professional lives. Classes will be taught by leading media lawyers and journalism educators, including Scott Dailard, partner at Dow Lohnes, PLLC; Jon Hart, ONA’s general counsel; Eric Lieberman, vice president and general counsel, Fusion; Deirdre Sullivan, senior counsel, The New York Times Co.; and Barbara Wall, vice president and senior counsel, Gannett Co.  Topics we’ll cover:

  • Copyright Law, including copyright basics, fair use, freelancer contracts, and licensing;
  • Newsroom Law, including newsgathering, libel, privacy, protecting sources, Section 230, and insurance; and
  • Running a Digital News Business, including branding, advertising, data collection, privacy policies, and promotions.

The day will commence with a plenary session devoted to discussing how freedom of speech and freedom of the press are changing in a digital world. To register, please go to the ONA’s conference page.
