The University of Idaho School of Journalism and Mass Media seeks applicants for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Media Law beginning August 2016.

The primary teaching area will be Law of Mass Media (a senior-level capstone course). The position may also include an affiliate appointment in the University’s College of Law, teaching one seminar per year.

The successful candidate will also be qualified to teach in at least one other area of journalism or mass media studies, such as global media; science or environmental communication; strategic communication; media research, and applied fields of law, publishing or new media.

All faculty members are expected to develop a program of scholarly research activity, to advise undergraduate students, to maintain strong professional contacts, to pursue external funding, and to serve on School, College and University committees.

Minimum qualifications:  Ph.D. in journalism, mass communication or media-related discipline, or J.D.; demonstrated teaching effectiveness at a College or University. A.B.D. applicants who present evidence of being able to complete their dissertation by August 2016 may be considered. Candidates seeking appointment as an Associate Professor must present evidence of at least six years of full-time teaching as an Assistant Professor or higher rank at a four-year college or university, and must have a strong record of teaching, scholarship and service consistent with the School’s guidelines for promotion.

Preferred qualifications:  At least two years of professional media experience or law practice (excluding internships or externships); ability to teach in more than one area of journalism or media studies (in addition to media law); strong research or creative ability in areas relevant to the School’s long-term interests; ability to contribute through scholarship and service to the School, the University and to media professionals in the region; interest and involvement in professional and academic organizations; experience working with multicultural populations or for media outlets serving diverse communities.
