Do you love to write about technology? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you should think about a communications internship with the Open Technology Institute at New America (OTI). The communications internship at OTI offers the opportunity to work on the many issues at the core of OTI, including net neutrality, encryption, freedom of expression, and exploring issues related to technology as it affects communities.

OTI seeks an enthusiastic, motivated undergraduate or graduate student or an individual with equivalent experience for a full-time communications internship for Summer 2017 in our Washington, DC office. You should be passionate about tech policy and interested in learning about and breaking down complex issues for broad audiences, while working in a rapidly-changing environment.

OTI works at the intersection of technology and policy to ensure that every community has equitable access to digital technology and its benefits. OTI’s staff includes noted experts on multiple issues who work closely with a diverse team of policy experts, technologists, social scientists, and data analysts. OTI is housed within New America, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States.

About the Job:

OTI is looking for a Communications Intern to work with our internal communications team. S/he will help support OTI’s efforts to build public discussion around issues by assisting with press list curation, content creation, creating visuals for the website and for social media, and supporting institutional efforts to refine the user experience on our website. S/he will report to the Senior Communications Manager. The internship is based in Washington, DC, right next door to the White House.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

-- Research and document process for posting OTI content (events, editorial content) to external sites
-- Track reporting on OTI issues, and draft relevant media pitches.
-- Update OTI’s press lists.
-- Website Audit - assist in managing and repairing user experience issues
-- Issue Based One Pagers - compile recent outputs on our issue areas that can be easily sent out for pitching or tailored as a quick hits reader
-- Visual Designs/Graphics - to be used on social media, in reports and more

Our intern will have the opportunity to author or co-author blog posts, articles, press releases or press pitches, as well as the chance to attend educational events in Washington, DC.

Qualifications:

-- Interest in gaining experience and developing a career in communications;
-- Current student at accredited college or university or possessing relevant professional experience;
-- S/he should be a self-starter with a positive attitude who can take on projects with minimal supervision;
-- Must be web-savvy;
-- Strong written and verbal skills;
-- Familiarity with Salesforce is a plus;
-- Video editing or print design experience is a plus;
-- Knowledge of Adobe InDesign & Photoshop is a plus;
-- Experience with a variety of social media platforms is a plus;
-- Interest in tech and policy will be a plus but not required;
