Duties & Responsibilities
This position requires the ability to absorb large amounts of written material and other media in a short timeframe from various sources, critically analyze, and synthesize that material. This could take the form of preparing materials for presentations; reviewing and editing article outlines; fact checking materials; summarizing original articles or papers; or creating slide decks and other digested forms. The research associate should be prepared to help plan materials for class sessions and syllabi, lead discussions, and work with project managers to accomplish research-related goals – making sound judgment and maturity a must.
Research is often self-directed with little outside guidance beyond broad outlines and themes — though occasional targeted research assignments can be expected — so the ability to critically appraise sources and identify interesting, relevant, and original ideas is essential. Excellent writing and editorial skills with an attention to detail are also required.
Wide-ranging interests and the ability to work on almost any issue or topic that arises is a plus, as is an ability to ramp up quickly on unfamiliar fields or topic areas. This job is an ideal opportunity for those interested in future graduate or law school studies.
Over the course of the year, a motivated individual will sharpen and focus her or his research agenda, and make valuable contributions to the field of cyberlaw and beyond. The research associate will delve into a variety of research areas, e.g. human computing, mesh networking, and cybersecurity, as well as topics surrounding access to knowledge, open scholarly publishing, and academic technologies.
This position serves as a conduit between Professor Zittrain and the Berkman Center, facilitating communication between the many teams and support staff involved with Professor Zittrain’s research at the Center — as well as researchers working with Professor Zittrain at Harvard Law School, the Harvard Law School Library, and beyond. This will entail close collaboration with Berkman Center staff and other research communities at the University.
Basic Qualifications

-- Previous teaching/TAing experience a plus. Previous formal experience in cyberlaw is not required, but a strongly developed interest in cyberlaw, the Internet, technology and policy is highly recommended.

Hiring Logistics
The position will not start before June 1, 2015. This is a term appointment, and is currently expected to extend through June 30, 2016 subject to funding and departmental need. We do not have the ability to provide authorization to work in the U.S. for this role. All offers to be made by HLS Human Resources.
