Public Citizen Litigation Group is seeking a staff attorney to develop and litigate public interest cases, primarily cases arising under government transparency laws. The Litigation Group is a 9-lawyer public interest law firm that serves as the litigating arm of the consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen. Located in Washington, DC, the Litigation Group litigates at all levels of the federal and state judiciaries. Since its founding in 1972, its lawyers have argued 63 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Litigation Group’s docket addresses a variety of topics, including:
-- government transparency, including cases involving the

-- Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Federal Advisory Committee Act,

-- health and safety regulation,

-- access to the civil justice system, including issues involving class actions, federal preemption, forced arbitration, and attorney fees,

-- the First Amendment, including cases involving speech on the Internet, government regulations, and campaign finance reform,

-- consumer protection, under statutes such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Truth in Lending Act, and
separation of powers and due process.

In addition to handling its own cases, the Litigation Group frequently files amicus curiae briefs in Supreme Court and appellate cases that raise issues within our areas of practice. Litigation Group lawyers also assist other Public Citizen groups and public interest organizations on legislative and regulatory matters. The Group’s lawyers frequently teach, write articles, speak publicly on legal issues, work on bar committees, and participate fully in the life of the legal community.

For more information on the Litigation Group and Public Citizen, go to www.citizen.org/litigation and www.citizen.org. The Litigation Group’s website includes information about current and former cases, and provides a comprehensive overview of our docket.

The new staff attorney will focus on open government matters, including litigating FOIA cases, providing advice to non-profit advocates about government transparency bills proposed in Congress, and assisting Public Citizen staff with FOIA requests. The lawyer may also work on other matters, as time permits.

Qualifications include a minimum of 1 year post-law-school experience, excellent analytical and research skills, excellent writing ability, creativity, and dedication to public interest work. Interest in government transparency a plus. Applicants must be admitted to a state bar and, if not already admitted to practice in DC, be eligible for admission to the DC Bar.

To apply, send a cover letter, resume, law-school transcript, list of references, and writing sample by email to litapplicant@citizen.org. The writing sample can be of any length; please do not send an excerpt. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
