Description
The Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ) of the Federal Communications Commission is responsible for conducting hearings ordered by the Commission. The hearing function includes acting on interlocutory requests such as petitions to intervene, petitions to enlarge issues, and contested discovery requests.
An Administrative Law Judge, appointed under the APA, presides at the hearing, during which documents and sworn testimony are received in evidence and witnesses are cross-examined. At the conclusion of the evidentiary phase of a proceeding, the Presiding Administrative Law Judge writes and issues an Initial Decision which may be appealed to the Commission.

General Duties
Interns will assist the Chief Judge in a variety of tasks related to the mission of the Office. Assigned tasks will include legal research, writing memorandums, and drafting orders in consultation with the Chief Judge. If the opportunity is available, interns will review factual materials for relevance and admissibility and analyze those materials when drafting orders.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school. The ideal candidate will have excellent writing and research abilities, some academic or practical experience relevant to communications law, and a strong interest in public service.

Additional Information
Interns are expected to reside in the District of Columbia, or in the immediate area of Virginia and Maryland, for the duration of the internship. Internships are unpaid.
