New America’s Open Technology Institute is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated law student for a full-time Legal Internship with OTI’s policy team for summer 2015 (typically starting in May or early June and ending in July or August). You must be passionate about tech policy and interested in learning about complex issues in a fast-paced environment. The internship is based in Washington, DC.

New America is committed to ensuring that all interns are compensated for their work. Although we do not have our own source of funding for summer interns, we will work with exceptional candidates who do not receive credit or funding from their schools to help find an alternate source of third-party funding.

New America is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. The Open Technology Institute (OTI) formulates policy and regulatory reforms to support an open and free Internet and facilitates the development and implementation of open technologies and communications networks. OTI’s staff includes several noted legal experts on multiple issues and those experts work closely with a diverse team of technologists, social scientists, and data analysts.

Responsibilities

  • -- Contribute research and writing to projects that may include a broad range of Internet policy issues, including but not limited to net neutrality, broadband access and adoption, cybersecurity, government surveillance, internet governance, copyright reform, and consumer privacy;
  • -- Conduct in-depth legal research and writing on a variety of topics;
  • -- Identify and analyze emerging issues in tech policy;
  • -- Assist with administrative tasks and event staffing;
  • -- Other tasks as directed.

Qualified interns may have the opportunity to author or co-author blog posts, articles, and research papers. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend educational events in Washington, DC, and to accompany OTI staff members attending meetings in Congress and administrative agencies.

Ideal Candidates For The Policy Internship Position Will Possess The Following Characteristics

  • -- Current or recently graduated law student at accredited school;
  • -- Demonstrated interest in relevant policy work;
  • -- Proven research and analytical skills;
  • -- Excellent legal and policy writing skills;
  • -- Acute attention to detail;
  • -- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, OpenOffice / NeoOffice and Google Docs;
  • -- Comfort discussing legal or policy issues with non-expert audiences;
  • -- Technical knowledge of Internet related tools and infrastructure a plus.
