About the Foundation

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has been making grants since 1967 to help people live measurably better lives. The foundation concentrates its resources on activities in education, the environment, global development and population, performing arts, and philanthropy, and makes grants to support disadvantaged communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The foundation’s assets are nearly $9 billion, with annual awards of grants and gifts totaling over $400 million. A 13-member board of directors provides overall direction for the foundation. For more information about the Hewlett Foundation, please visit www.hewlett.org.

About the Special Projects Program

The foundation has two time-limited grantmaking efforts run out of the Office of the President; the Cyber Initiative and Madison Initiative. The goal of the Cyber Initiative is to cultivate a field that develops thoughtful, multidisciplinary solutions to complex cyber challenges and catalyzes better policy outcomes. Its grantmaking focuses on a range of internet, cybersecurity, and tech policy issues, with grants made to an array of universities, think tanks, advocacy groups, and other civil society organizations. Additional information about the Cyber Initiative is available here; a list of recent Cyber Initiative grants is available here.

The foundation also reserves funding each year to support Special Projects that do not necessarily align with the foundation’s primary strategies, but further its general philanthropic mission. These grants serve a number of discrete purposes, such as encouraging collaboration among programs or with other foundations and supporting community interests. Funds are also available for discrete, one-time grants to ideas that align with the foundation’s interests but fall outside its other programs.
