Duke University School of Law is launching a new, interdisciplinary Ethical Tech Law and Policy Clinic to identify and shape the many legal, policy, ethical, and technical issues that arise in connection with evolving digital technologies. To launch and lead the Ethical Tech Law and Policy Clinic, we are looking for a dynamic data- and tech-savvy lawyer devoted to critical thinking about socio-technical systems and to shaping ethical technology development in the public interest. The Director will design the Clinic and then work with students, interdisciplinary fellows, and affiliated faculty from across campus to serve community-based organizations and to translate practice-based research into technology law and policy that benefits all.
Evolving digital technologies have the potential to enhance democratic participation, economic opportunity, and the capacity for self-determination. They might also exacerbate inequality, structural exclusion, and the concentration of power in the hands of the few. The decisions we make regarding law, public policy, business forms, and systems design will help determine how digital technologies impact society and the human experience. Deeply engaged with and responsive to the needs community leaders and community-based organizations and further supported by a broad range of interdisciplinary researchers and practitioners, the Clinic will offer significant leadership in ensuring that evolving digital technologies benefit all people, especially those from traditionally marginalized communities.
In addition to supervising students, working with client and partner organizations, and teaching in the Clinic, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue other interests, such as non-clinical teaching in Duke Law’s curriculum and/or related research. The precise contours of the position, including title, faculty status, and institutional governance rights, will be tailored to the strengths and interests of the successful applicant and formalized with his or her input.

Qualifications:
This is a novel clinic, working on novel problems. As a result, we recognize that the successful candidate may have a non-traditional background. While we welcome and strongly encourage applications from experienced clinical teachers, we are equally excited for applicants currently working in the legal profession, in business, or in the social sector. The successful candidate will, above all, be a creative, dynamic leader who demonstrates a results-oriented track record marked by intellectual curiosity, a commitment to collaboration, and a public-interest orientation.
The Clinic aims to launch during the 2020-2021 academic year. Membership in the North Carolina Bar, or eligibility for admission and a willingness to become a member, is welcome and preferred.
