The Borealis Fund has awarded a grant to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to create a one-year legal fellowship, with the possibility of a one-year renewal, in order to expand its capacity to better identify, support, and address the legal needs of journalists of color, newsrooms led by people of color, and reporters covering issues pertinent to communities of color, across the country. The Borealis Legal Fellow will be part of a team of Reporters Committee attorneys who provide pro bono legal services to individual journalists, including documentary filmmakers, and news organizations.

Responsibilities:

● Working with RCFP staff attorneys to litigate impact cases involving access to court records/proceedings and issues arising under state and federal freedom of information laws, including conducting legal research and drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs;

● Drafting amicus briefs on behalf of media coalitions in state and federal appeals presenting important freedom of information and First Amendment issues;

● Responding to hotline inquiries under the supervision of RCFP staff attorneys;

● Assisting in client representations of various kinds, including pre-publication vetting for independent and freelance journalists and documentary filmmakers;

● Producing newsroom trainings;

● Co-authoring legal guides, blog posts, and other online resources available for free on our website.

Required Qualifications:

● J.D. from accredited law school; must be admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction or awaiting bar exam results/admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction at the start of employment;

● Excellent written and oral communication skills;

● Good judgment and the highest level of professional integrity.

The salary for this position is $65,000 per year with fully paid health insurance, paid time off, 401k and other benefits.
