U.S. Free Expression Programs Director

PEN America is seeking a passionate, visionary advocate to lead our First Amendment advocacy agenda in the U.S. The U.S. Free Expression Programs director will bring a strong legal background on free speech and the First Amendment, and will lead our work to defend free expression in the U.S., with a focus on issues including the future of journalism, protest rights, censorship, disinformation, and articulating an inclusive and equitable approach to the robust defense of free speech. This role offers the opportunity to craft and carry forward a vision for the role PEN America can play in fostering a healthy information landscape, bolstering societal trust, and countering the threats to free expression and democracy the U.S. faces today and will continue to face in the years to come. The position requires a JD and is based in New York.

 

Advocacy Coordinator, Washington, D.C.

PEN America is seeking a dynamic, committed, and highly-organized advocacy coordinator in our Washington, D.C. office to support our advocacy agenda with Congress, executive branch agencies and departments, think tanks, counterpart civil society organizations, and the media. The Washington office advocates on a range of U.S. and international free expression issues, and the position affords opportunities to deepen key advocacy and campaigning skills, build contacts and expertise, and work with a dynamic, growing team. This is a great opportunity for an early- to mid-career individual interested in building their advocacy skills in DC!

 

Congressional Liaison, Washington, D.C.

PEN America is seeking a congressional liaison who will bring robust knowledge of Congress and the legislative process, significant advocacy experience, a formidable work ethic, and affinity for fast-paced environments to the role, which will involve developing advocacy strategies and engaging with the legislative branch on a range of critical and urgent free expression issues. Based in PEN America's Washington office, the congressional liaison is a new position, offering the opportunity to engage in meaningful and varied work on a range of free expression and human rights issues in the U.S. and globally as part of a dynamic, growing team.

 

Program Manager, Digital Safety & Online Abuse Defense

PEN America seeks a dynamic and results-oriented program manager to lead our work to protect writers, journalists, artists, and activists from online abuse and bolster their digital safety. This is a rapidly expanding area of PEN America's work and this is a new position, which will offer significant opportunities for professional growth, leading new projects, and building new contacts while supporting meaningful and impactful programs.
