Description

Location: Washington, DC
Term: One year, starting in the summer of 2016.
Application Deadline: January 15, 2016

Upturn is a nimble consulting firm, helping our clients shape public policy in response to new digital technologies. Our team brings together expertise and training in law, public policy, computer science, and engineering. We work for clients we believe in, and are passionate about what we do. The projects we’re actively working on include:

Civil rights: Automated “big data” systems are increasingly making the key decisions that shape people’s lives, from policing to housing to employment. At Upturn, we work alongside leading civil rights organizations to ensure that these systems advance social justice.

Internet freedom: The US government is committed to helping people overseas access the free and open Internet — but it’s far from obvious which tools will make the biggest difference to users in need. Upturn conducted a landmark study, Collateral Freedom, that has helped shape the strategic direction of the Internet freedom field, fostering an emphasis on strategies that increase the collateral costs of Internet censorship.

Financial justice: Payday lenders are moving online, but the state-level rules that protect borrowers were made for a brick-and-mortar world. What can be done to protect consumers and fight fraud, in this new and fast-changing Internet landscape? Upturn will soon release a detailed report on the online payday loan ecosystem, designed to inform and energize an emerging policy debate.

We're looking for a fellow to join our team for a one-year appointment starting in the summer of 2016. The fellow will be an integrated member of our team, working across the gamut of our practice. Salary will be competitive with the leading public interest fellowships, and we will provide you with health insurance and other benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES

You will:

-- Research and write memoranda on a wide range of technology, policy, and social justice issues.
-- Attend client meetings and help to prepare and review client-facing deliverables.
-- Track new technology and policy developments, and write posts for Equal Future.

REQUIREMENTS

This fellowship is open to recent recipients of graduate degrees in law, computer science, or other relevant fields, who have a clear track record of active interest in issues at the intersection of digital technology and public policy. Candidates completing other fellowships are welcome to apply.

Ideally, you are:

-- Meticulous and detail oriented. You are remarkably organized and able to create and optimize systems to support your own work and the work of your team.
-- A clear communicator. You express yourself clearly and effectively in both written and verbal communications.
-- Proactive in finding ways to get things done and meet professional goals. Your track record shows that you can thrive in an unstructured environment, and be dependable starting on day one.
-- Comfortable with technology. You understand how Internet and digital technologies work and can describe them to a layperson. When learning about a new technology or concept, you can quickly identify what you know and what you don't, and proceed with your research accordingly.

HOW TO APPLY

Send a cover letter, CV, and up to three relevant examples of your writing or other work to recruiting@teamupturn.com. Tell us why you’re right for this fellowship. Be creative, and be concise.

Two letters of reference will ultimately be required of leading candidates. If you have these ready, you may optionally send them (or have them sent) to us along with your initial application. Otherwise, we will request them if and when you become a finalist for the fellowship.
