Oppressive fees. Lengthy delays. Secrecy run amok. Public records laws are not perfect, but what can be done?

The UNC Center for Media Law and Policy will be joining with the AEJMC Law and Policy Division for a Sunshine Week panel discussion that will confront some of the most vexing issues facing access to government information today and explore areas in need of research and reform.  The panel features leading journalists, lawyers, and scholars who are bringing fresh thinking to a transparency mechanism that has been blunted and burdened by decades of secrecy practices.

Panelists include:

  • Gbemende Johnson, Associate Professor, Hamilton College
  • Amy Kristin Sanders, Associate Professor, University of Texas at Austin
  • Gunita Singh, Staff Attorney, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
  • A. Jay Wagner, Assistant Professor, Marquette University, and Member, Federal FOIA Advisory Committee
  • Mark Walker, FOIA Coordinator, The New York Times, and President, Investigative Reporters and Editors

The event is free and open to the public on Zoom. To register, please go here: https://go.unc.edu/FOIA
