Description:

The First Amendment Clinic at the University of Georgia School of Law seeks a full-time summer law intern for 10 weeks.

The Clinic defends and advances the rights of free speech, press, assembly, and petition via direct client representation and advocacy, particularly on behalf of individuals and organizations who cannot afford or do not otherwise have access to counsel with First Amendment expertise. The Clinic also serves as a resource for journalists, students, government employees and members of the public on issues of open access and free expression in order to promote a better-informed citizenry.

Proposed Starting Date: May 17, 2021, negotiable.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM

Advertised Salary: $12.00/hour

Responsibilities 

Any, or a combination of, the following: legal research and writing; case evaluation; civil discovery (both taking and responding) including written requests, depositions, and document review; drafting briefs and other court documents; communication with clients, experts, opposing counsel; prepare and deliver presentations on First Amendment issues; create content for the Clinic’s website.

Qualifications:

At least one year completed and in good academic standing at an ABA-accredited law school.

Ability to:
- Research case law and statutes.
- Conduct fact analysis and apply relevant legal concepts.
- Produce clear, concise writing.
- Communicate orally and in writing in professional, collegial manner.
- Balance more than one project/case at a time.

- Self-directed and able to work independently.
- Interest or background in civil liberties, First Amendment, and/or media law.
