Description
The American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont seeks applicants for the position of staff attorney in our office in Montpelier. The ACLU-VT is an affiliate of the national ACLU and works to defend and promote civil liberties through legal, legislative, and education programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify and review potential litigation; present to affiliate’s legal advisory - panel and board of directors
- Draft legal memoranda, demand letters, and advocacy letters
- Recruit, supervise, and coordinate volunteer attorneys for ACLU litigation
- Participate directly in litigation in selected cases, either as co-counsel with cooperating attorneys or, when necessary, as lead counsel
- Supervise law student interns and volunteers
- Articulate ACLU views to the public, the news media, and the Vermont Legislature as requested by the executive director
- Write articles for the ACLU’s newsletter, annual report, and other publications
- Develop and maintain relationships with legal staff at national ACLU and other affiliates
- Additional duties as assigned by the executive director
QUALIFICATIONS
- J.D. with at least three years of legal experience (more recent law school graduates with exceptional abilities and experience will be considered)
- Litigation experience (clerkship, fellowship, or law school internship will be considered)
- Admitted to Vermont bar or eligible for admission and no history of professional discipline
- Substantive knowledge of constitutional law and civil liberties
- Ability to develop and implement non-litigation strategies
- Strong self-motivation and ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and the mission of the ACLU
- Facility for administrative work; ability to juggle multiple tasks
- Foreign language skills, especially Spanish, a plus

- Salary commensurate with experience within parameters of ACLU-VT compensation scale
