THE OPPORTUNITY
At Netflix, we are shaping the future of entertainment because we believe there is a better way to watch. Our international efforts have brought Netflix around the globe to virtually all countries and we’re excited to bring even more of our Originals programming to our viewers. With 125 million subscribers enjoying great content in over 190 countries, it's an exciting time to work at Netflix. Netflix seeks a seasoned music licensing attorney as Senior Counsel, Music to help support the
distribution of the Netflix service all over the world. The successful candidate will join the Music Group, which is part of the Business & Legal Affairs Team based in West Hollywood, CA, USA. The Music Group itself is located in Los Angeles, London and Berlin and is responsible for all of Netflix’s global music business and licensing strategy. This encompasses the production and licensing of Netflix Originals; the administration of Netflix’s repertoire of music; business intelligence; and the
distribution of the Netflix service globally. This exciting and challenging role focuses on the distribution side of the business and will be responsible for structuring, negotiating and drafting agreements with collective management organisations (“CMOs”). Most of the CMOs that Netflix works with license music publishing rights, but some manage other types of authors’ or performers’ rights and therefore candidates with a broad range of commercial & IP experience in this respect will be preferred.
A central part of the role requires the preparation of the commercial and legal strategy for negotiating licenses with CMOs. This involves working with internal stakeholders, reviewing technical and financial data, and taking ownership of the deal process from start to finish. Candidates must have experience of licensing copyright and related rights in multiple jurisdictions, together with a strong understanding of the issues facing technology companies operating in the content space. The role also involves advising the business on music issues as and when they affect discussions with either the licensors or the producers of film and TV content suppliers globally.
He or she will handle music contract and copyright related matters as they arise, will likely need to dig into local law and practice in various international territories, and should be extremely comfortable working independently and counseling business partners and making decisions that have both legal and business impacts. He or she should ideally have a curiosity for technology, reporting formats and music data. He or she will have an innate ability to maintain organization and focus that fuels his/her effectiveness in successfully juggling multiple projects. The successful candidate will also thrive in an environment that places thoughtful efficiency over process, yet have the ability to work with organizations or institutions who may not hold the same beliefs. If you are this candidate, you love working in an environment where freedom and responsibility are a tenet, and passion, innovation and curiosity are mandates: https://jobs.netflix.com/culture. Curiosity is a plus if you seek a role which offers unique opportunities to expand and grow beyond your immediate area of expertise, and to collaborate with colleagues in our US and international offices who share your passion for music, copyright and the entertainment industry.
This is an opportunity to be part of a public company with a great consumer brand and to help Netflix shape the future of entertainment. There is some flexibility on the location of the role and will depend on the successful candidate’s circumstances. The role reports to the Head of the Music Group, part of the Business & Legal Affairs team at Netflix.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have: 8+ years of music licensing experience, including: immersion in structuring, negotiating and drafting music licensing agreements between technology companies and CMOs / owners of music rights; strong international experience; in-depth knowledge of music copyright and related rights; solid understanding of how copyright and related rights are licensed and managed in the entertainment industry; practical knowledge of the music and technology industries; and understanding of the evolving theatrical, SVOD, VOD, TV, syndication and home video landscapes. International market experience is strongly preferred. Experience providing in-house support in a technology or music company is highly preferred.
The successful candidate will also possess the following:
• Clear, concise communication skills.
• Strong analytical capabilities and judgment, even when the rules are unclear and
the issues are of first impression.
• Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a
fast-paced production environment.
• Ability to pivot quickly and fluidly, think practically and be solution-oriented.
• Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise.
