About the Clinic: The Duke Environmental Law & Policy Clinic's mission is to train the next generation of leaders to solve environmental problems by providing access to justice in underserved communities. Operating collectively as a public interest law firm with eleven distinct practice areas and housed in its own wing of the law school, the Duke Legal Clinics provide students challenging opportunities to deepen their substantive legal knowledge, strengthen their advocacy skills, and build their professional identities. The Environmental Law & Policy Clinic (ELPC) is a joint program of Duke Law School and the Nicholas School of the Environment that represents non-profit clients in civil matters. The Clinic provides a range of services to its non-profit clients, including factual and legal research, litigation representation, policy research and development, and project counseling. Cases involve a wide range of matters.

About the Position: This two-year position offers a salary and benefits commensurate with comparable non-profit communications professionals. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position located in Durham, North Carolina. Some additional evening, weekend, and travel assignments may be required. Responsibilities: The Senior Communications Manager will play a critical role in planning for the Clinic#s tenth anniversary, as well as serve as a conduit between the exciting work of the Duke ELPC and the network of people that supports it: Clinic alums, current students, prospective students, and donors.

The Manager will be responsible for:

-- Sharing ELPC's impact on students and on the community groups it serves.
-- Leading the planning and execution of several events, including: the Clinic's 10th anniversary celebration in November 2017 and an annual lecture in February 2018 focused on environmental justice.
-- Serving as the Clinic's primary media contact.
-- Developing fresh content daily for the Clinic blogs, Duke ELPC Twitter feed, and for the Duke Law and Nicholas School Facebook pages and otherwise maintaining and expanding the Clinic's social media engagement.
-- Aiding faculty in writing projects geared around their research interests.
-- Providing staff support for the Environmental Law newsletter, and other channels aimed at Clinic alums, donors and prospective students, focused on the student experience and the impact of the Clinic.
-- Maintaining the database of ELPC's current students, alums and donors, in coordination with the Office of Development.
-- Assisting with classroom instruction as needs require.

Required Education:

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Political Science or a related discipline.

Preferred Education: 

J.D. from an ABA-accredited school. 

Required Experience:

Work requires two years of directly related writing and copy editing experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Preferred Experience:

-- Academic training and/or professional experience with environmental law and policy.
-- At least two years' professional experience working in environmental communications, including social media.
-- Demonstrated experience with event planning.
-- Graphic design, writing and photography experience.

Preferred Skills:

-- Excellent writing skills with experience writing on deadline for both non-technical and academic audiences.
-- Demonstrated time management skills and ability to work with diverse subject matter.
-- Highly organized and detail-oriented.
-- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and discretion, especially when communicating with the media.
-- Ability to take ownership of assigned projects.
