The Center for Democracy & Technology seeks an experienced lawyer or policy professional to serve on as counsel to its project on the open internet. The position offers an exciting opportunity to help define and execute a strategy to shape law, public policy, and corporate practices on key issues of the digital age.  Specific substantive areas of focus will depend on the candidate selected, but successful candidates will have experience with net neutrality, digital copyright, cybersecurity research, trade policy, and/or other intellectual property and telecommunications issues.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Policy Counsel of CDT’s project on the open internet include:

-- Identifying and analyzing internet openness issues globally;
-- Legal and policy analysis and development of arguments and policy recommendations related to maintaining and strengthening the Internet’s openness;
-- Helping define and implement a proactive agenda for advocacy and engagement on priorities identified in collaboration with other projects;
-- Coordination with CDT’s other policy teams;
-- Ability to think globally and identify international outcomes;
-- Authoring testimony, policy comments, articles, op-eds, and blog posts;
-- Identifying amicus opportunities and coordinating participation in strategic litigation with pro bono counsel, other advocates, and Internet companies;
-- Outreach and advocacy to a wide range of stakeholders including legislators, regulators, technologists, companies, advocates, and academics;
-- Representing CDT before policymakers, the media, and at conferences and other public events.

Qualifications

An ideal candidate would have:

-- A law or other graduate degree related to Internet and technology policy;
-- A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in relevant legal or policy positions with increasing levels of responsibility;
-- Knowledge of internet and technology law and policy issues, with experience in digital copyright or telecommunications law strongly preferred;
-- Strong issue-spotting and problem-solving skills and a passion for finding the right answers to hard problems;
-- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including press experience;
-- Proven track record of successful engagement in legislative and executive/regulatory advocacy;
-- Knowledge of internet technologies;
-- Demonstrated commitment to the open internet and CDT’s public interest mission; and
-- An entrepreneurial and collaborative working style.

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with experience and is competitive with public interest and government pay scales. CDT also offers excellent benefits, including health care and dental coverage, retirement plan and generous vacation and parental leave.
