Description

Description:

FPF is seeking to hire a Policy Counsel to support its work on: 1) artificial intelligence and machine learning; and 2) emerging ethical questions relating to privacy and data protection. The proliferation of data collection has encouraged innovative uses of information in all sectors of society. Individuals’ personal data is increasingly used by algorithmic systems that employ machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies; this provides benefits to consumers, businesses, and society, but can also create privacy risks. Further, the analysis of personal data once done by researchers in academic institutions has been embraced by a rapidly growing number of companies, not-for-profit organizations, and governments. FPF’s Policy Counsel for Artificial Intelligence & Ethics will support the organization’s portfolio of projects exploring the possible harms and the potential frameworks, models, and standards to advance valuable research opportunities across sectors while ensuring the ethical collection and use of data.

Key responsibilities for the position are expected to include: working with the CEO and Senior Counsel to help define a strategic vision for FPF’s ethics portfolio; undertaking independent research, analysis, and writing on ethical, legal, and policy issues presented by emerging technologies, including automated decision making systems; leading outreach and collaboration with interested FPF stakeholders, interest groups, civil society, relevant government agencies, academics, and other key partners; and organizing events and meetings with stakeholders, both in person and virtual.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. or Masters degree in a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2-5 years’ experience in relevant legal, policy, or technical positions with specific knowledge of questions relating to ethics
  • Basic understanding of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning technology (highly desired)
  • Familiarity with related U.S. and European legislative and regulatory privacy laws
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Interest in emerging trends in technology and implications for users and society
  • Demonstrated project planning, research, and organizational skills
