OpenTheGovernment.org is searching for a National Security Fellow to help with a coalition addressing government transparency and secrecy issues. This is NOT a legal fellowship and does not require a law degree. It does require: basic knowledge of national security secrecy, secret law, and classification system reform issues; and a minimum of 3 years’ work experience, preferably in related work.
The Fellow position involves, in coordination with staff,
- Assisting in crafting statements of the coalition’s reform objectives related to national security secrecy, secret law, and classification system reform.
- Assisting in implementing the objectives -- including through setting up meetings among our community and with government officials
- Research and writing about these objectives, including in relation to the U.S. National Action Plan for the Open Government Partnership.
- Working with other strategic partners on potential policy reforms.
OpenTheGovernment.org employment requires:
- Experience creating and using social media, such as wikis, blogs, etc.
- Superior oral and written communication skills
- Excellent research skills
- Strong interest in open government issues
- Enthusiastic and self-motivated work style with high level of attention to detail
- Interest and/or course work in law, political science, public policy, journalism, and/or information management
- Excellent computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
Time Commitment: 40 hours per week starting mid/late February 2014 through mid/late March 2015.
This Fellowship is paid, and includes benefits. It is based in Washington, DC.
