As Coursera's first Legal Counsel, you will play a key role in bringing an affordable education to everyone. You will help develop and execute on deals that will help Coursera expand our partnerships, market share and achieve sustainability. You will initially report to our President, and in this role, you will manage the negotiation process, coordinate legal strategy and help build out Coursera’s legal operations. Additionally, you will have a wide ranging mandate to work across the Coursera team, with business development, engineering and course operations, to help craft solutions to the novel series of legal challenges Coursera faces each week.

We are looking for an experienced lawyer who can build efficient legal processes for the company and quickly execute on strategically important deals. The ideal candidate will be skilled and experienced in creating and negotiating contracts that will be central Coursera’s growth. The candidate must be passionate about changing higher education and interested in working for a social enterprise.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on externally facing projects and will have both a strong legal mind and a good grasp of the business world. The candidate should also be entrepreneurial and comfortable working in an ambiguous, quickly changing environment with a high workload.

 

Requirements:

JD degree with current US bar membership, and at least 6 years of experience after law school;

Direct experience with drafting and negotiating contracts, mostly focused on content licensing

No less than 4 years experience writing contracts related to content and content licensing

Must have business acumen

 

The following would be helpful, but is not required:

MBA or comparable background in business

Experience with education

Legal experience with stock options, human resources, and venture capital

A career spanning experience both in a top law firm and outside a law firm - be it as a lawyer or in some other capacity - will also be helpful

 

Responsibilities:

Negotiate and quickly close on agreements with a series of university, corporate, and other partners

Develop proactive solutions and immediate responses to a range of possible legal issues

Coordinate the scaling up of Coursera’s legal operations

Support the business development lead with special projects and follow-up

Manage work of and oversee budgeting for outside Legal Counsel
