Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour in order to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. Greenpeace is present in more than 55 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. Greenpeace International is the global coordinating body of the organisation, is located in the Netherlands and is now looking for a Legal Counsel to support our Communications Hub.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled media lawyer to provide legal advice and support to Greenpeace International, National and Regional Offices and the Greenpeace International Communication Hubs, together with the lawyers working in the Greenpeace International Legal Unit.

This role would be similar to that of a lawyer in the editorial legal department of an international newspaper or a news channel.

Job description

Your main responsibilities will include:

-- Legal review of communications materials (libel/defamation review)
-- Legal advice and support to research, investigations, campaigns and communications departments
-- Litigation management
-- Public interest litigation
-- Develop and maintain a relationship with the Greenpeace internal and external legal network, train and facilitate skill sharing
-- Develop and maintain knowledge of international human rights law, media law and information law in order to provide pro-active guidance and advice to Greenpeace

What are we looking for

-- University and/or a post-graduate degree in law
-- Minimum 3-4 years work experience as a professional lawyer, preferably in an international context
-- Demonstrable knowledge of and experience in international human rights with a focus on free speech and media law
-- Experience in media litigation
-- Fluent in English, both written and spoken
-- Knowledge of additional languages is preferred
-- Willing to work on call if necessary
-- Willing to travel if necessary
-- Willing to work outside of normal business hours
