Description

The Associated Press seeks law students for its paid Business Associates Program.

The General Counsel Associate will review AP’s current contract templates and form agreements, research new claims, copyright enforcement, brief writing, and help standardize certain contracts and processes. The associate will facilitate discussions with AP in-house counsel about important provisions and common transaction “hot spots.”

Other responsibilities include:
• Assist in implementing new contract processes.
• Participate in review of substantive legal provisions.
• Prepare and file copyright applications.
• Partake in copyright infringement investigations.
• Aid in-house counsel with newsroom support on a wide-range of issues, from access to defamation.

The associate will gain great insight into the operations of a legal department in a media company, a deeper understanding of substantive of law from copyright to defamation to contracts. An understanding of copyright and First Amendment law will be acquired.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be second-year full-time law students enrolled in a college or university in the United States, with a demonstrated interest in media. Previous employment or academic background in research, digital media or media law is a plus.

Candidates should have strong research, analytical and quantitative skills. They must have the ability to gather and analyze raw data from a variety of sources, draw conclusions and develop actionable recommendations. The ability to work effectively in a team environment with various levels of employees and excellent time-management and organization skills are essential. Outstanding presentation skills are required. Knowledge of Salesforce or SharePoint will be a plus.

Desired computer skills include a strong knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite along with the ability to meet tight deadlines with strong attention to detail and possessing excellent verbal and written communication skills. Punctuality and professional attire are required for the office.

All candidates must be available to work in New York City starting June 1, 2015, for 12 consecutive weeks on a full-time basis.
