Description

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, is seeking two full-time activists. These positions will focus on privacy, security, and surveillance issues, and will have adaptability to cover a wide range of other issues from time to time.

The ideal candidate will have passion for protecting freedom online with the ability to think critically and prioritize time effectively.  You can respond quickly, usually with written material, to urgent deadlines while maintaining a focus on long-term goals and EFF’s core values. You excel at bringing people together to work for a common purpose, keeping a positive attitude while navigating disagreements. You’re adept at implementing: finding solutions and adapting to changes as ideas turn into projects and campaigns. You are an unusually strong writer, capable of articulating the most complicated legal and technical issues with grace. You are a superb storyteller.

As an EFF activist, your responsibilities would include:

  • -- Learning quickly and communicating our sometimes complex technical and legal issues to "mom and pop" audiences in a clear, compelling, and concise voice;
  • -- Writing both rigorous and compelling blog posts about EFF’s work in a timely manner;
  • -- Producing stellar social media content for all of EFF’s social media feeds;
  • -- Creating, updating, and curating content for EFF's information-packed website;
  • -- Developing energetic and innovative education and activism campaigns that engage both EFF's membership and the general public;
  • -- Collaborating constructively with others, both inside and outside the organization;
  • -- Managing projects and campaigns, and working closely with colleagues and vendors to ensure that our ambitious projects launch smoothly and in a timely fashion
  • -- Speaking publicly about issues related to technology and civil liberties; and
  • -- Helping prioritize issues given our available staff resources, and matching tactics and strategies to goals.

Required:

  • -- Excellent writing skills;
  • -- Strong familiarity with and passion for digital civil liberties issues;
  • -- Collaborative writing and editing;
  • -- An eagerness to learn about new issues;
  • -- A track record of successfully managing complex projects while maintaining an upbeat attitude;
  • -- Social media management;
  • -- The ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders, both inside and outside the organization,
  • -- An ability to turn things around quickly and comprehensively.

In addition, knowledge of or experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

  • -- Technical skills, including content management systems;
  • -- Public speaking experience;
  • -- Professional journalism, or formal training in journalistic or creative writing; and
  • -- Experience organizing online activism for an advocacy-oriented nonprofit organization.

This is a full-time position based in EFF's office in San Francisco, CA.  If you don’t want to live in the Bay Area, you should not apply for this job.

To apply, you must submit each of the following here:

1. A cover letter (in the appropriate text box)
2. A resume (this should be an attached PDF)
3. A minimum of 3 but up to 5 online writing samples. (Submit links in the cover letter section. If they aren’t already online, just publish them online before you submit them).
4. Any other supporting materials (such as videos of presentations you’ve given, multi-media collateral you have created, etc).
