On January 25, the Center for Media Law and Policy will be co-sponsoring a “Fireside Chat” with Cherie Givens, chief privacy officer for the N.C. Department of Information Technology. The event is being hosted by UNC’s Center on Technology Policy and is open to the public.

Givens is responsible for a strategic and comprehensive statewide privacy program that defines, develops, maintains and implements policies and processes that enable consistent and effective information privacy practices. She is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) and an attorney with more than 20 years of experience. She joined NCDIT in December 2021 after more than a decade supporting federal privacy programs in the Washington D.C. area – first as a federal employee and then as a contractor.

Givens will sit down with Matt Perault, director of the UNC Center on Technology Policy and a professor of the practice at UNC’s School of Information & Library Science.  Perault previously led the Center on Science & Technology Policy at Duke University and was a professor of the practice at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy. Before that, he worked at Facebook, where he was a director on the public policy team and the head of the global policy development team.

This event coincides with Data Privacy Week and is also being co-sponsored by the NC Tech Association and the UNC School of Data Science and Society. Lunch will be provided.
