The UNC Center for Media Law and Policy is a forum for study and debate about the important media law and policy issues facing North Carolina and the nation. The center’s goal is to enhance the discussion of media law and policy issues by bringing together people who represent a diversity of informed views.

The UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the UNC School of Law developed the center in 2004.

The center hosts a variety of speakers from around the world. Center events range from formal lectures to intimate dinners, from moderated debates to classroom visits. Students, faculty and scholars from a variety of disciplines, as well as lawmakers, attorneys, journalists and the public attend the center's events.

Reader Privacy: Should Library Standards Apply Online?

The UNC School of Law and the Center for Media Law and Policy will hold a half-day symposium on reader privacy in the digital age. Speakers will include Jane Horvath, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC); and Andrew McDiarmid, policy analyst at the Center for Democracy & Technology. Additional speakers will be announced soon.

Miriam Nisbet, Director of the Office of Government Information Services
Friday, March 13
Miriam Nisbet, director of the Office of Government Information Services at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, will be the keynote speaker at the AEJMC Southeast Colloquium. OGIS is the new FOIA policy office and provides mediation services to resolve disputes between FOIA requesters and administrative agencies.

 News Item Wade Hargrove Honored
Friends and colleagues of attorney Wade Hargrove recently established an annual media law colloquium in his honor. More than $200,000 was raised for the Wade H. Hargrove Communications Law and Policy Colloquium. Hargrove, a partner with Brooks Pierce in Raleigh, has been NCAB executive director and general counsel for more than 39 years, NCCTA general counsel for 30 years and Hearst communications regulatory counsel for 20 years. He has supported the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the UNC School of Law as an adviser, volunteer and donor.
 
News Item Media Law Student Publishes Articles
UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication doctoral student Woodrow Hartzog has had one article published and another accepted for publication. The online, peer-reviewed journal First Monday published his article "The Privacy Box: A Software Proposal." Hartzog's article "Promises and Privacy: Promissory Estoppel and Confidential Disclosure in Online Communities" will appear in the Winter 2010 issue of the Temple Law Review
