Position Description for USPTO Bangkok Externship Program – Summer 2013
 
The Office of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Regional Intellectual Property Attache for Southeast Asia in Bangkok, Thailand, has a legal and policy externship opportunity available for Summer 2013.
 
The Regional IP Attache is responsible for all of Southeast Asia/ASEAN and acts as a resource to U.S. Government personnel in the region on intellectual property protection and enforcement issues, serves as a resource for host governments in the region and their national IP offices, and coordinates all technical assistance, training, and capacity-building provided in the region by the USPTO on a wide range of IP protection and enforcement topics.
 
The Extern will assist the Regional IP Attache and his staff of Intellectual Property Specialists by:
 
·         Doing research and monitoring IP legal, regulatory and policy developments and judicial decisions in the region; assisting in following up and updating intellectual property and related legislation in Southeast Asian countries; and researching and preparing reports on the intellectual property protection and enforcement environment in each country;
 
·         Assisting and supporting the training and capacity-building activities of the Regional IP Attache and the USPTO, including conferences, seminars, workshops and roundtable with both Thai Governmental agencies and agencies in other countries in the region; assist with the planning, organization, and management of educational, outreach, and capacity-building activities and programs; and training and, when appropriate, interface with government agencies, NGOs, and private sector representatives and industry groups.
 
Applicant must be an adult.  Preference is for at least a 2L student in an accredited U.S. law school who has taken a course in IP or has a strong interest or background in IP-related fields or an LL.M. student with a focus on IP or international trade.  A 1L will be considered.  Fluency in a language other than English spoken in Southeast Asia is an asset, but not required.
 
The Externship can be scheduled between May 13 – August 30, 2013, with flexibility to meet the selected student’s law school schedule.  The position is uncompensated, and any travel and living expenses while in Thailand are solely the responsibility of the selected student.  No housing allowance, travel expenses, or visa assistance are provided.  The position is a non-sensitive position within the U.S. Embassy, access to classified material is not authorized, and the employee is not allowed access to any classified areas.  A U.S. Government security check is required to be completed successfully before the selected student can begin the externship.
