Role Summary

NPR is seeking an attorney with 1 to 3 years of experience providing legal advice on some or all of the following: licensing and commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, labor and employment, intellectual property, corporate governance, nonprofit tax, and legislation. This is a full-time, temporary position. It is currently funded through September 2015, but may be extended as budgeting permits.

Essential Duties Include:

  • Reviewing, negotiating, and drafting contracts, including inbound and outbound content licensing agreements, technology acquisition and service provider agreements, event and facilities agreements, employment and personal services agreements, and the like;
  • Analyzing proposed legislation and regulations and preparing internal memoranda and agency comments;
  • Preparing board meeting agendas and minutes and other board documents, and conducting legal research and providing advice on corporate governance matters;
  • Conducting legal research and advising legal and business colleagues on a wide range of topics: from copyright, trademark, and patent law to First Amendment and newsroom law; from employment and labor law to communications law; from privacy and data security law to corporate governance and nonprofit tax law;
  • Preparing memoranda, presentations, and other materials for internal or external audiences.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, with excellent academic credentials
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience
  • Bar membership in good standing (preferably District of Columbia)

Required Skills:

  • Superb oral and written communications skills
  • Interest in and knowledge of media, technology, intellectual property, and commercial contract law
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, to set and adjust priorities, to work under pressure, and to maintain composure and a sense of humor while doing so
  • Professionalism and business judgment
