The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is seeking an individual to teach COM 698 Media Law on Mondays 9:30-12:15 in the spring 2016 semester (3 credits).

Course Description: This course examines the limits to freedom of expression for the mass media in the United States, with a particular emphasis on the rights of journalists. Topics covered include the rights of journalists as laid out in the Constitution, in judicial decisions, in state and federal statutes, and in administrative regulations; libel; shield laws; freedom of information; right of access to public and private venues; obscenity, indecency and hate speech; and First vs. Sixth Amendment issues. The class, a graduate seminar, typically has between 15 and 20 Master’s students. Instructor should have a law degree and relevant knowledge of the industries involved.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; law degree preferred. Preference will be given to those with previous experience teaching a college-level course and with relevant knowledge of the industries.

Responsibilities

It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

-Developing a syllabus.

-Ordering in advance books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes.

-Preparing for classes.

-Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.

-Grading student assignments and examinations for the course in a timely manner and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University Rules.

-Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.

-Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
