Capital One seeks a dynamic, creative, Director-level attorney to help dream, disrupt, and deliver a compelling Digital Agenda for a Top 10 U.S. Bank. Come find out why Steve Wozniak—cofounder of Apple—recently referred to Capital One as “the Apple® of banks.”
In partnership with Capital One’s Digital Group and other stakeholders, you will work directly with internal and external thought leaders, including those in our New York, San Francisco, and DC Digital Labs, to provide creative legal solutions for innovations that will Change Banking for Good, including:

 

-- Mobile payment platforms, such as Apple Pay;
-- Smartphone/tablet app development and implementation,
-- API development and implementation;
-- Big Data implementations;
-- Leveraging open source software, and contributing enhancements to the broader open source community; and
--  Social media initiatives.

 

You will also be part of a team responsible for delivering world-class client service in a fast-moving environment that requires flexibility, creativity, and a good sense of humor.

 

Responsibilities will include:
-- Analyzing legal issues in support of new product development on digital initiatives from Capital One’s Digital Labs and lines of business;
-- Developing/reviewing Terms & Conditions governing the use of Capital One’s APIs, smartphone and tablet apps, and other technologies;
-- Developing and maintaining legal advice and guidelines related to enterprise wide digital issues (e.g., web browser decommissioning standards, ESIGN, authentication, tokenization, big data, data security, geolocation etc.);
-- Supervising outside counsel in the preparation of legal advice;
-- Managing outside counsel budget and timelines;
-- Collaborating with corporate contracts and litigation group on digital-based matters such as digital contracts, venture investments and litigation, respectively; and
-- Preparing and conducting legal training on digital-related issues.

 

Basic Qualifications:
-- Juris Doctorate (JD) with admission to at least one state bar
-- At least 7 years of relevant legal experience on a wide range of digital/e-commerce-related legal matters, including privacy, data security, social media, ESIGN, the Electronic Funds Transfer Act/Reg E, and mobile payments

 

Preferred Qualifications:
-- Working knowledge (but not mastery) of intellectual property issues, such as trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks, and patents
-- Exceptional communication skills - ability to convey and discuss technological issues in understandable terms and to establish, manage and leverage relationships with management, co-workers, the relevant technical community, and internal and external partners
-- Highly creative thinking and problem solving competencies in a high volume and fast-paced environment, with a demonstrated ability to lead or collaborate with others across multiple discipline areas to achieve tangible results
-- Willingness to take the initiative, and do more than is expected
-- Results-oriented team player skills, who works best in a collaborative environment
