Description

The Berkeley Center for Law & Technology is the focal point at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law for teaching, research, and student activities on issues at the intersection of law and technology. BCLT’s programs encompass the full range of technology law, including intellectual property, privacy, cybercrime and cybersecurity, biotech, entertainment law, and telecommunications regulation.

The Fellow will work with BCLT faculty and the BCLT Executive Director to develop educational resources for the judiciary on privacy and technology issues and to support the privacy programming of BCLT. The Fellow will have substantial time to engage in independent research on privacy-related issues, drawing upon the support and guidance of BCLT faculty and the broader Berkeley Law School academic community.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Fellow’s primary responsibilities include:

• Working with the BCLT faculty and the BCLT Executive Director to develop educational resources (briefing papers, webinars, seminars) for judges on the technologies relevant to current issues in privacy law;

• Under the supervision of BCLT faculty and the BCLT Executive Director, researching and writing articles or reports on privacy law issues, including pieces directed at audiences beyond academia;

• Working with BCLT faculty and staff to organize workshops, conferences, talks, and meetings with judges, lawyers, policymakers, and industry representatives;

• Serving as an advisor to student projects in the Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic.

Minimum Qualifications Required (at time of application):

• Candidate must hold a JD degree or equivalent degree;

• Admission to practice law in at least one state (California Bar not required).

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least one year experience as a lawyer;

• Knowledge of privacy law and policy;

• Excellent research, analytic and writing skills;

• Experience as a judicial clerk;

• A passion for exploring the issues at the intersection of law and technology.
